MBS Alumni Club of Chicago

Who We Are

We are an active social organization that serves all the 3,000 strong Ross alumni community in Chicago. We have a host of events every year, ranging from social & networking events, to lunch-n-learn sessions, to full conferences. The purpose of our group is to encourage active participation among all Chicago alumni, both in Chicago and in the suburbs.

What We Do:

Social & Networking Events
Once a month, the Ross Alumni Club hosts a social event targeted at Ross alums. The main purpose of these events is to network, meet up with old friends, and make new contacts. Our events have been at pubs, restaurant bars, hotels, or at concert venues. The atmosphere is relaxed, and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Luncheon with Leaders Series

The Club regularly offers a luncheon series, where we bring in prominent Ross alums to present on various topics.

On May 11, 2007, Ross alumni were honored to hear Bryan Gruley, Wall Street Journal Chicago Bureau Chief discuss his business, the media in general and the changes sweeping journalism.  Attendees heard personal anecdotes from Bryan’s career, as well as relevant and meaningful discussion of the current issues faced by the WSJ, and the rest of print media.  Everyone enjoyed this intimate event with one of business’s movers and shakers.  We thank Bryan for sharing his insights with us!

Seminars and Conferences

Our fourth annual Spring Conference was April 19, 2007.  “Deal or No Deal:  M&A and Unlocking Corporate Value in Today’s Markets”

Leveraged buyouts, strategic mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, dividend recaps, spinoffs, going public, going private: the pace of corporate dealmaking continues unabated in 2007 after reaching record levels in 2006.  This year’s 4th* annual Michigan Ross School of Business Spring Conference held by the Alumni Club of Chicago will focus on key recent developments in the deal market and what’s behind the rush to unlock corporate value using a variety of transaction and restructuring strategies.  Perspectives will be provided by experienced and highly regarded academics, corporate executives, investment banking and private equity professionals.   A keynote speech by Professor Amy Dittmar of the Finance department of the Ross School will be followed by a panel discussion among distinguished Michigan alumni regarding trends in M&A and corporate restructuring strategies, the broad impact on businesses, shareholders and stakeholders, and views on future expectations.  This event is designed to give attendees unique, “inside” perspectives on a subject which, not surprisingly, dominates today’s financial headlines, while enabling participants to extend their U of M networks and relationships with other graduates and industry participants.

Conference Participants included:

  • Amy Dittmar, Assistant Professor of Finance, U of M Ross School of Business
