McNerney in October to present results of their projects and gained

BorgWarner Teams present their projects to Executive Council
Four student teams sponsored by BorgWarner captured
the Executive Council's attention in late October. The company annually
welcomes sponsored teams to present their findings to BorgWarner
executives. CEO Tim Manganello said that BorgWarner has benefitted
greatly from its relationship with the Tauber Institute, and though the
teams' findings are not always easy to hear, he is grateful for the
insight and examination of his company's inner workings. "If you shine a
light on something, it get fixed," he said. The teams posed with
Borgwarner Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Timothy M. Manganello
with the first place award.

Global Operations Conference
The fifth annual Global Operations Conference
brought industry leaders, faculty, alumni and students together to
strategize ways to advance the worldwide practice of Operations.
Participating in the product development
panel was alumni, John Bayless (MBA '04).
Guided by a series of presentations from high level speakers and
panels, the 2011 Global Operations Conference reflected on the past
decade of operations management, and looked forward to solutions for the
next ten years.

"Serial" Entrepreneur Scott Newman-Bale shares his experience through
the Tauber Leadership Speaker Series (TLSS)
Scott Newman-Bale, CFO and Partner of Short's
Brewing Company on December 8th shared his experience with students. The
event was hosted by the Tauber Leadership Speaker Series. Scott moved to
Michigan after working for a number of years as a Video Games Designer
for Electronic Arts and EA Sports in the United Kingdom. Wanting a
change, he went back to college to study business so he could stay in
America. As a senior he helped start a brewery that later became
one of the largest in Michigan, averaging 80% growth a year for the last
5 years.

Advanced Manufacturing Partnership
U-M is one of only six universities participating in the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership, a new federal initiative to boost U.S.
competitiveness. Supported by 11 corporate partners, this $500-million
effort will investigate opportunities in emerging manufacturing technologies and
processes. Hundreds attended a regional meeting this month.

Paper
by Professor Yavuz Bozer one of top-10 highly cited papers published in
IIE Transactions
Professor Yavuz Bozer's paper, "Optimizing Inbound and
Outbound Door Assignments in Less-Than-Truckload
Crossdocks", co-authored with IOE PhD graduate, Hector
Carlo, has been included in the top 10 most often cited
papers for IIE Transactions over the last 3 years. The
paper may be downloaded for free
here.

Institute of Industrial Engineers.

Geoffrey Phillips MBA '98
Geoffrey serves with Anuj Gupta as co-chairman of
the Tauber Scholarship Committee. Phillips leads Product Development for
NSTAR, an electric and gas utility company in Boston, Massachusetts. As
such, he is focused on energy efficiency for commercial and industrial
customers. “My job is to develop new products for targeted customer
segments that will enable our customers to reduce their energy
consumption. As a utility, we do not actually create the technology, but
we have to package it intelligently to meet the needs of the target
customers and offer the appropriate incentive to increase the adoption
rates of our programs,” Phillips said.

Anuj
Gupta ME '03
Anuj started his professional career in 2000 in
Mumbai, India, where he managed a dozen people at a specialty chemical
plant. Today, he is Global Manager of Brewery Operations and Strategic
Planning for Anheuser Busch Inbev in New York City where his
responsibilities include overseeing $10B in variable manufacturing costs
across four continents.
Gupta came to the University of Michigan in 2002 to pursue his
Master of Engineering, Manufacturing and Operations Management
degree and to participate in the Tauber Institute for Global
Operations program. He was awarded the TMI Merit Scholarship in
2003.

Kok Keng (KK) Goh '07
KK worked with ZS Associates, a sales and marketing
consulting company based in Evanston, IL. KK specialized in sales force
inventive compensation, call planning, forecasting and product
development planning. This past year, KK left to pursue entrepreneurial
efforts in real estate and started Sucasa, LLC. KK works with private
investors from the US, China, India and Singapore to finance
fix-and-flip and buy-and-hold investments in the Chicago area. |

In mid-October, Mario was promoted to director,
global manufacturing quality at Life Fitness, a Division of Brunswick
Corporation. |

Ashish Vatsal MBA '11
After graduating from Ross this year, Ashish spent
three fabulous months backpacking around South America. Highlights of
the trip included going on wine tours in Mendoza, admiring the splendors
of Iguazu Falls, fishing for piranhas in the Amazon jungle, swimming
with sharks in the Galapagos Islands, hiking the Inca Trail to Macchu
Picchu, and picking up basic Spanish.
In mid-August, he joined BCG Chicago as a
Consultant, which has kept him busy with interesting, challenging
projects and intelligent, motivated teammates. In Chicago, he's been
busy exploring the city with his fellow Tauber Bar-Runners. |

Dennis Teo MBA/MSE '97
Dennis recently launched his consulting firm
focusing on supply chain strategy and operations based in Shanghai.
"After years of contemplation (mostly procrastination) I have mustered
the courage to leave my job of 6 years as Supply chain director of a
4bil USD tire manufacturer to realize my dream of becoming an
Entrepreneur. I am also honored to serve in the newly created TAB role
as the Committee Chair for Asia Outreach". In this role, Dennis will
lead Tauber’s efforts in networking, scholarship, mentoring and

Katie, Lisl (7) , Addie (5), Archie (2) and Nick
welcomed Matilda "Tillie" Joan Abstoss into their family in late June.
She was born in at 1:02 pm, weighing 6 Lbs 6.5 Oz. with a full head of
hair (just like her brother and sisters). Mom and baby are doing well!
