Abe Mark Nornes

Abé Mark Nornes is associate professor in the Program of Film and Video Studies and the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is the author of Japanese Documentary Film: From the Meiji Era to Hiroshima (Minnesota UP) and Forest of Pressure: Ogawa Pro and the Postwar Japanese Documentary. He has published a variety of articles in edited volumes and journals such as Cinema Journal and Film Quarterly. He co-edited Japan-America Film Wars (Routledge), In Praise of Film Studies (Kinema Club) and many film festival retrospective catalogs. He is on the editorial board of Documentary Box (Japan) and has been co-owner of the internet newsgroup KineJapan since its inception. He is currently finishing a book on the role of translation in film history. Nornes has also been a coordinator for the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival since 1990.

Atsushi Taketani

Atsushi Taketani is the First Secretary, Economic Section, for the Embassy of Japan in the United States. Prior to his appointment at the Embassy of Japan, he was the Deputy Director, Fair Trade Division, Small and Medium Enterprises Agency, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) from September 2002 to April 2004. From July 2000 to September 2002, he was the Executive Assistant to the Senior Vice Minister of METI. From June 1998 to July 2000, he was the assistant director, Defense Policy Division, Japan Defense Agency. Before that, he took several positions in METI. He received a B.A. from the University of Tokyo and an M.A. from Stanford University.

Noriyuki Ken Okada

Ken Okada has over 15 years of music and technology experience in software programming, as well as music composition and performance. He is one of the three founding members of Acoustic, Inc. Established in 1999, the company specializes in mobile contents development and interactive music software. Mr. Okada designed the basic algorithms of Acoustic's ringtone remixing engine "remix4U" and ringtone optimizer "Finalizer", which are the core technologies of Acoustic’s ringtone services “Best Hit Remix” (available on NTT DoCoMo, Vodafone and KDDI portals), “Rich Music Box Tones” (available on Vodafone and KDDI portals), and oversea versions in China, Russia, Spain and Thailand.
Okada brings his extensive knowledge of the success of Japanese mobile content market into the U.S. market. At Improvista, Okada led the sound production and system design of Mobjam, a ringtone service for AT&T Wireless users since July 2003, solving the unstructured sound specs situation among handset models. His recent focus is to design successful off-portal mobile applications engaging multiple platforms such as WAP, PC Web, J2ME, SMS, Premium SMS, MMS, WAP Push and Email, with deep understanding of cultural and technological differences between Japanese and U.S. mobile content markets.
Okada is a graduate of the University of Tokyo with a degree in law and he is an accomplished jazz bassist. He made his first appearance at world-famous jazz club Yoshi's in Oakland in September 2004 and also played in the 47th Anuual Monterey Jazz Festival.

Terunobu Yamauchi
Director of Technology, JETRO Chicago

Terunobu Yamauchi is Director of Technology for the JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) Chicago Office. Mr. Yamauchi’s role involves managing the advanced technology exchange projects and the technology incubator program.
He joined Japan’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry, (MITI) in 1990 in the Electric Power Development Division. He has held a number of management posts in technology, science and environmental-related divisions. In May 2002 he was named Executive Assistant to the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and in June 2004 he became Deputy Director, Trade Finance and Economic Cooperation Division, his role involves coordinating trade finance, determining the economic cooperation policy and promotion of trade and investment.
Mr. Yamauchi earned his Bachelor of Engineering as well as his Master of Engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, in Tokyo, Japan. And in May 2000, he earned his Master of Environmental Management from Yale University, in New Haven, Connecticut.
