What is Private Equity?
As a business develops and begins to mature, a company may choose to access the private equity markets to fuel new growth, or may choose an alternative path such as LBO financing.
Private Equity is a broad term that includes different types of investments in the alternative asset class. Its broadest definition is an equity investment in a privately owned company. However, it would also include a privately negotiated investment in a pubic company (P.I.P.E.). During the 1980’s, private equity was associated with the leverage buyout (LBO) funds but now would also include mezzanine debt, distressed debt, real estate and turnaround investments. The asset class has historically outperformed the stock market.
