Ross Net Impact Forum 2009: Next practices to address future challenges explored the changing role of business in society given recent economic challenges and political changes. Over 300 business leaders, students, and faculty convened to discuss how the public, private, and non-profit sectors should address the host of complex and interconnected social and environmental issues now impacting business. The pervasive theme was that the role of companies in society is fundamentally changing. It is no longer enough for companies to be content with doing “less bad”, as traditional concepts of corporate social responsibility and sustainability imply. According to keynote speaker Jason Saul, the corporate imperative is now “about creating positive social change that is benefiting the business.” John Ehrenfeld, another keynote speaker, echoed this by encouraging business leaders to strive for “flourishing”, rather than simply sustaining.
