The 2008 Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC) is seeking
college
and graduate students to enter a national business plan competition in
which
students from around the world create commercially sustainable
businesses
that address problems of poverty in the developing world. Competition
organizers have expanded the competition this year to include global
health
plans. Submitted plans will be judged by their impact on quality of life
in
developing countries, implementation feasibility, and financial
sustainability. Contestants will need to demonstrate how their plans
will
impact population health, as well as how those health care benefits are
good
for society. The deadline for preliminary materials is Oct. 31.

5. William James Socially Responsible Business Plan Competition- [top]

Dear Michigan Net Impact Chapter Leaders

Greetings and Salutations. My name is Ian Fisk, and I have been a longtime member, supporter, and chapter leader (Yale SOM and DC Professional) of and for Net Impact. In keeping with my desire to use the power of business to make a better world, I run the William James Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs who are starting sustainable businesses.

Our primary project is a Socially Responsible Business Plan Competition, and I wanted to get the word out for our 5th annual event (summaries are due on November 16th). Net Impact members have always been our core community for both judges and submitters, and I plan to keep it that way.

Full details on the competition can be found at www.williamjamesfoundation.org.

I've included a summary below, and attached a PDF file with more information.

I'd be most appreciative if you could forward the information below to people in your chapter who you think would be interested.

Thank you for your assistance. And I hope to see you in Nashville at the Net Impact conference in a few weeks.

Sincerely,

Ian Fisk

The William James Foundation's 2007-08 Socially Responsible Business Plan Competition

Who Can Enter:
We're looking for individuals or teams that are starting for-profit businesses with a socially responsible/sustainable component. These businesses can be social enterprises (for-profit subsidiaries of not-for-profits), and we will accept plans that have been submitted to other competitions. At least one member of the team must be either a current student or recent graduate (within 10 years). See http://www.williamjamesfoundation.org/criteria for more details.

What's the Timeline:
Executive Summaries (3-5 pages) are due on November 16th. If selected for the second round, full plans are due on February 8th. See http://www.williamjamesfoundation.org/timeline for more details.

Who are the Judges:
We are working with a pool of judges from three areas: those who are either subject matter experts in the areas in which we traditionally receive plans (organic food, green building, fair trade, diversity initiatives, etc.), entreprenuers, and individuals who look at business plans on a regular basis (VCs, Bankers, CDC staff, etc.) Most of our reading judges are made so by invitation, but we are open to having more judges. To apply, see http://www.williamjamesfoundation.org/judges for details.

What are the Prizes:
The top Prize that we offer to all entrants is detailed feedback on your summaries and plans. In addition, we have a prize basket for the top plans of cash and professional services ( e.g. 25 hours with a lawyer, 20 hours with an accountant, etc.) Last year's basket was worth more than $35,000.

Other Competitions:
Your chapter members might be interested in our list of more than 40 competitions, which they can see at http://www.williamjamesfoundation.org/competitions.
