Jagadeesh Sivadasan

Professor Jagadeesh Sivadasan obtained a PhD in Economics (and an MBA) from the Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago. He also holds a BTech degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and a PGDM from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.  Prior to moving to the University of Chicago for his PhD, he worked as a financial consultant for Arthur Andersen in India.

Professor Sivadasan’s work focuses on understanding firm behavior. He uses firm and establishment level data to explore research topics in empirical IO, trade and development, with a primary research focus on the causes and consequences of differences in firm level productivity and performance.  He has examined the impact on firm behavior and efficiency of product market deregulation (tariff liberalization and FDI deregulation in India), labor market regulations (in a study of Chile and in cross-country study of a retail chain), financial development (across Europe), tax law changes (in India), patent applications (in the US) and cartel breakups (cross-country).  In other work he has examined the impact of sunk costs on productivity dispersion and market structure.  In ongoing work, he is examining the drivers of exporting behavior, and the impact of regional input price variations on the regional variations in firm level productivity.

Professor Sivadasan teaches the core Applied Microeconomics course for both the Day and Evening MBA programs.  He has also co-taught a PhD course in International Business.
