Rosemarie Ziedonis is an Assistant Professor
of Corporate Strategy and International Business. She received her Ph.D. in
Business and Public Policy from U.C. Berkeley’s Haas School of Business in
2000. Prior to pursuing doctoral studies, she was an analyst in
international trade and finance at the U.S. General Accounting Office, where
she evaluated international agreements related to intellectual property and
research and development (R&D) programs. She was previously employed by the
Institute for International Economics, also located in Washington, D.C.
Prior to joining the UM faculty in 2002, Professor Ziedonis was an Assistant Professor of Strategic Management at the Wharton School. She is currently a Senior Fellow in the Management Department at Wharton and remains affiliated with Wharton’s Mack Center for Technological Innovation.
Professor Ziedonis’ current research investigates the strategic use of intellectual property and the mechanisms firms use to identify and absorb external technologies. Her research has been published in leading economics and management journals, including the Rand Journal of Economics, Management Science, and Research Policy. Her 2001 article in Rand, “The Patent Paradox Revisited: An Empirical Study of Patenting in the US Semiconductor Industry, 1979-95” (with Bronwyn Hall) was identified by ISI in 2002 as one of the most widely-cited papers published in economics and management journals in the past two years. She presented the results of this research, in addition to her more recent studies on defensive patenting and patterns of litigation within the semiconductor industry, at the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department’s joint hearings on Competition and Intellectual Property in 2002 and a series of workshops sponsored by the U.S. National Academies of Science and Engineering on the role of patents in a knowledge-based economy. The findings of her research have also been highlighted in the popular press, including articles in the New York Times and the Economist.
At Michigan, Professor
Ziedonis teaches an MBA elective course she developed, Intellectual Property
and Competitive Strategy, and an MBA course in corporate strategy.
