What do Oprah and Al Gore have in Common?

Yup, both Al Gore and Oprah have run a marathon.  Al Gore ran the Marine Corps marathon, and Oprah ran the Chicago marathon.  Al Gore ran his on a bet, and Oprah ran hers to prove to herself that she could win the struggle with weight control.  Whatever your motivation or desire, if you have a health dream, and if your joints are up to it, then you can run a marathon.

I ran one on Sunday October 21, 2001.  Like all marathons, it was at once both exhilarating and pretty darn painful.  But the range of emotions felt between pleasure and pain help inspire people to run.  Many parallels between a marathon and life exist.  In life we feel the full spectrum of emotion.  A marathon experience condenses these emotions to just a few hours.  In life, especially in America, if we really want something, then we have to work quite hard for it.  A marathon illustrates well the reward of hard work (training and preparation) when you reach your goal (finishing the race).

If you ever want to run a marathon, now is the time to start training - and yes, you can run despite Michigan Winters.  Curious?  Yell at us, and we can work toward a goal for you.  Oprah and Al can do it.  You can too.

Thanks to all the UMBS classmates and community who supported the CRC fund-raising effort for this marathon.  Many of the other runners on the course were inspired by our school's efforts; UMBS leading the way.
